Long before the Iron age 1000 BC, even pre-Bronze age 3500BC ,people have lived on and around Shehallion.Scotland at this time was covered in Dense pine woodlands ,this was known as the "Ancient forest of Caledon".

When the Romans invaded Britain 55AD they quickly swept all aside they were unstopable. Their main tactic involved deploying on open ground in line formations and Phalanx (which were solid blocks of Soldiers).When they reached Scotland it was covered in dense forest and hills,with very few roads.Unable to deploy to their full potential in the forest> They were easilly outmanoevred,ambushed, harried and terrified by the fierce Pictish Warriors , who would appear from out of the forest ,attack, then dissapear back into the forest.They knew the paths and routes through the forest,and could easilly defend the narrow paths.This is what the Romans later called the "forest fortress",on account of its seeming impregnabillity),The much later Gaelic translation of this was "Choille Dun",Thus the name "Caledon", or "Caledonia".The Romans could not penetrate the thick well defended forest,and eventually fell back to Southern Scotland,where they built Hadrians wall.To hide behind,Listen to "Griggle.Aye" and all this becomes apparent. Shehallion is the geographic centre of Scotland,it was the "Heartland" of the Picts.Surrounded by the Forest fortress it became the hub of "Pictland",and sacred land of the ancients. Sidh Chaillean (Shehallion) means "Fairy hill of the Caledonians".It has been revered since the dawn of time.The ancient Picts revered Shehallion as a sacred mountain.They believed Shehallion to be Hollow, and was said to be the gateway to "Tir nan Og" The "Underworld".There certainly are numerous caves in there ,not all of them easy to find.So its understandable that it was considered hollow. [font=Verdana]Sciatach (Skiatha) was a Pictish Queen, said to descend from the mythical Valkiery of legend ,a race of Warrior Women.She used to train young elite warriors in her training camp on the isle of Skye.She reputedly trained Chuchullain,of Celtic legend.She was wounded in battle several times and on one occasion her wounds were so severe that she knew she must die.This occasioned her pilgramage back to her mother land, back to Shehallion the "land of her ancestors" to die.She took a loyal band of Bodyguards to escort her to her journeys end ,and final resting place on "Shehallion". In 1997 United Artistes and Polygramme video presentations , produced the epic "SHEHALLION".(some acclaimed it as Scotlands answer to Riverdance, but it was a lot more besides, music and dance).It Chronicled the story of Scotland from ancient beginnings till present. The storyline has Skiatach arrive at the Sacred mountain with her bodyguards,only to encounter the "Shehallion Fairies"(guardians of the Underworld),who cast a spell and send them into a dreamworld,where by the help of a "Sennachaid" (Storyteller) the story of Scotlands past and future is revealed to them................................On returning from the dreamworld Skiatach finaly dies,She is carried by her guards and laid to rest on Sheihallion ,while the faries come and take her spirit to the ........."Land of her Ancestors", The guards are not unhappy, for it has been revealed to them , the future.They know that the spirit lives on and it will be the people of Scotland who will rise again .............and Grow...and Grow !!!
